Two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree.
For optical signal processing, electrical control of the optical signals is needed and the most general element relating to this is a broadband phase modulator. This PhD scholarship will explore wafer bonded electro-optic (EO) modulators in barium-titanate (BaTiO3), lithium-niobate (LiNbO3) to realise efficient modulators. To optimise such platforms, wafer bonding, dry etching, and design of suitable electrode structures will be challenging tasks. This project aim to combine the χ(2) functionalities of the EO modulators with the outstanding χ(3) performance already demonstrated in SPOC to complement and further enrich the optical signal processing capabilities of our integrated photonic platforms.

About the project/department
This project is part of the centre of excellence Silicon Photonics for Optical Communications (SPOC) funded by the Danish National Research Foundation and established in 2015. The SPOC centre was established to aim at significantly advancing the state-of-the-art in ultra-high capacity optical communications and this PhD project will be at the heart of this activity.
